At the international festival "Laputa" in Tokyo, the cartoon "Hedgehog in the Fog" was officially named the best animated film of all times and peoples and received first place out of 150 works. The second place was taken by the cartoon “A Tale of Fairy Tales”. The author of these works, artist and director of animated films, Yuri Norstein, turned 75 on September 15.

Yuri Norshtein was born on September 15, 1941 in the village of Andreevka, Penza region, where his parents were evacuated. After school, he completed a 2-year animation course and in 1961 began working at the Sozyumultfilm studio. His debut work was the cartoon "The 25th, First Day", which he shot together with Arkady Tyurin.

In 1964, Norstein drew a flea dance for the cartoon "Lefty". For him, this work became significant also because at this time he met Francesca Yarbusova, who became his wife and real companion.

Hedgehog made of tears

Not everyone knows that Norshtein himself created compositions, frame sketches and sketches, and his wife, artist Francesca Yarbusova, was engaged in drawing. The hedgehog from the famous cartoon has a special story.

The writer Lyudmila Petrushevskaya (the author of the script for the cartoon "A Tale of Fairy Tales") wrote in her memoirs that the hedgehog is a cast of her profile. And there really is something in common - the tousled hair and upturned nose of the writer really resemble a hedgehog. But Norstein himself dispelled this rumor: “Nonsense. The hedgehog was very difficult to draw. There were hundreds of these hedgehogs on the cartoon screen, and it was difficult to break through this system and find your own. Francesca did a lot of sketches, and one day we got to white heat. I shouted: “It should appear for a split second - and be imprinted! The profile must be absolutely clear, clear! " And after all these terrible screams, heart drops, she suddenly sat down and painted."

Sad and mysterious masterpiece

The cartoon "Hedgehog in the Fog" was released in 1975. His script was based on the tale of Sergei Kozlov, and the cartoon was voiced by famous actors: Vyacheslav Innocent (Bear), Alexei Batalov (narrator) and Maria Vinogradova (Hedgehog).

Today it’s hard to believe, but "The Hedgehog in the Fog" barely made it into distribution. They simply didn’t believe in it and released it only on the small screen of the “Russia” cinema. No one would have thought that the cartoon would be sold out for 14 months.

The cartoon "Hedgehog in the Fog", despite such a slight sadness, became an absolute hit among children and adults. Kids were attracted by interesting characters and unusual animation with a mysterious plot. For them it was a kind fairy tale about friends. And adults saw an allegorical philosophy in the cartoon. It contains space, the flickering of nature, and many symbols. "Hedgehog in the Fog" is a kind of Russian Zen, a parable about the way of knowing the world through the refusal of knowledge. Remember: the talking fish, the horse revelation, the tree of life. A hope for a miracle that does not die even in the dusk. After all, all this is about all of us.
