Alfred Cheney Johnston (known as Cheney among friends and associates) has always dreamed of a career as a photographer and has been pursuing this goal since childhood. After graduating, he worked as a portrait painter, but there was barely enough money to live on. In 1917, he was lucky to meet with Siegfeld, who signed a contract with him for fifteen years, according to which the young photographer's job included the duties of conducting photo sessions of models and actresses who participated in the Siegfeld show, as well as attending social events, filming famous guests to advertise the show in newspapers.

To create your show Ziegfeld Follies Florence Siegfeld, inspired the Parisian variety show Foley-Bergere, but he wanted something more complex, meaningful, so he combined Broadway show, vaudeville and variety show … and he did not fail. His productions were very popular and were staged from 1907 to 1931 in many theaters New York. Many artists who participated in the show were nicknamed "Siegfeld's Girl", hence the name of the same name for the photo shoots conducted by Cheney Johnston. Probably there would have been more than one production if not for "The Great Depression", due to which Siegfeld lost almost all his money, and Cheney Johnston's work. Money problems, devastation in the country and stress hit the health of the already middle-aged Siegfeld hard and in the same year, at the age of 63, he died.
