Portraits created by a young Spanish artist Borja Martinez, although they are watercolors, but not drawn on paper, but "crumbled". Instead of dipping a brush in water and then picking up paint of the desired color from a palette, Borja Martinez breaks dry watercolor into small pieces, down to grains of sand, and then lays out portraits of celebrities from these multi-colored crumbs. This unusual project was named Crushed Watercolor Portraits … Borja Martinez calls himself a generator of curious ideas, and prefers to work with equally curious, unique materials, using everything from grass to salami slices in his work. Dry watercolor is hardly the strangest material on this list. Most likely the most traditional. The only unusual thing is the technique of working with watercolors. But first things first.

First, the artist draws a vector image of the character, schematic but recognizable. Then he creates a template, cutting out the details that he plans to fill with color. And only then the most interesting thing begins: having crumbled dry watercolor into small pieces, Martinez begins to "paint" the template with multi-colored grains of sand, adjusting the fragments of paint to the shape of the cutouts. Some have to be postponed, because they do not fit in shape or size, but it does not matter, they will be useful for the next job. Mixing iridescent watercolor dust, combining colors and shades, the artist paints unique portraits of celebrities, unlike any of the others, already created by his numerous colleagues.

Why many young artists prefer to start their career with portraits of famous people, historians, scientists, politicians and showmen, one can guess endlessly. Most likely, their work was noticed, and then paid attention to other works. So far, Borja Martinez has been laying out schematic portraits of Che Guevare and Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama from crumbled watercolors. But in his portfolio, at Lo Siento Studios, there are still a lot of interesting works that will surely find their admirers.
