Drawings James D'Aquino so small that you will not find them right away. And so unexpected that they cause the one who admires them at the moment, delight in half with surprise. And all this despite their simplicity and even asceticism, because they are drawn … inside the most ordinary matchboxes … The artist's muse is just as austere and simple. According to the author, he is inspired by pop art as such, with its numerous references to comics and horror films, the work of famous artists, the covers of tabloid novels and magazines from the "yellow press" category … Legends and myths, fairy tales and epics, the culture of neighboring peoples, and even human anatomy gave Jason D'Aquino subjects for paintings, inspiring him to work, as can be judged by taking a closer look at his series of works on matchboxes.
Garden D'Aquino considers himself a master of miniature, since the material that he has chosen for creativity requires a special technique. Finely, delicately distributing space on a small canvas, which is nothing more than a matchbox laid out on the table, the artist depicts posters, portraits, copies of such famous paintings as La Gioconda or the Scream, scenes from Star Wars, and sometimes whole panoramas on it. And you’ll never guess what’s inside when the matchbox is closed.
Jason D'Aquino lives and works in New Orleans, and his work can be found at Art Basel Miami or on his personal website.
