We rarely think about empty toilet paper rolls, right? Yes, there is nothing to think about - it's just a piece of cardboard, which is destined to end up in the trash can. But it was this ordinary and commonplace material that Anastassia Elias once drew attention to and easily turned it into fragile miniature sculptures.

In general, the topic of cutting out certain objects from cardboard rolls is not new and has already been raised on the pages of our blog. We talked about the Japanese Yuken Teruyacreating stunning paper gardens out of this material. However, the difference between Anastasia's works is that the scenes she creates “live” not on the surface of the roll, but inside it!

The most amazing thing is that by carving out scenes of everyday life inside the roll, Elias leaves the outside intact. The individual elements are arranged inside in such a way that they give structure and depth to the sculpture. This is achieved due to the light, which, passing through the roll, illuminates some figures and leaves others in the shadows. Anastasia photographs her sculptures from different angles, as a result of which only one specific part of the work is always open to the viewer.

Sculptures by Anastasia Elias mainly focus on everyday activities - relaxing at home, listening to a lecture or going to the market. This choice is probably not accidental: in this way the author reminds us of the domestic nature of the material she has chosen.
