October is on the calendar, which means that very soon the beloved Halloween holiday is waiting for us. The main attribute of All Saints Day is, of course, pumpkins. According to tradition, a semblance of a face is cut out of them and a candle is placed inside. True, true masters of their craft are not limited to schematic eyes and a smile, they turn pumpkins into magical paintings. The Roger Williams Park Zoo (Rhode Island, USA) displays the best works annually - during the existence of the festival, more than five thousand have already been created. Jack-O-Lantern.
To guess why these pumpkins got such a name, it is enough to recall the ancient Irish legend, according to which the blacksmith Jack managed to outwit the Devil twice during his lifetime, and when he died, he did not go to heaven or hell, so he only had to wander the earth, illuminating your way with a piece of coal. To make the light brighter, Jack put a smoldering ember in an empty pumpkin.
A whole "squad" of artists, led by John Reckner, are working on the creation of the wonderful pumpkins. The sketch is drawn with an ordinary ballpoint pen or marker and then it is a matter of technology. Rather than punching through holes, carving specialists carve out the desired pattern, retaining a thin layer of pulp (about a quarter of an inch thick). After the image is illuminated by a light bulb, the drawing becomes three-dimensional and looks just great.
Since the opening of the exhibition has not yet taken place this year, we present to your attention last year's photographs. Then more than a hundred pumpkins were turned into real works of art. The theme of the festival was formulated almost according to Shakespeare: "The whole world is theater", because Jack's lamps were decorated with portraits of heroes from popular films, Broadway shows and television series. The author of the series of photographs is Frank C. Grace. He admits that it was a great honor for him to make a photo report, because unusual lamps are short-lived: depending on the weather, they can last from a week to several days. Of course, it is important to capture these masterpieces so that the memory of the jewelry work done by the artists remains.
By the way, you can learn about all the secrets of preparing for the celebration on the eve of All Saints' Day from the thematic review "The Art of Preparing for Halloween", published earlier on our website Culturology. Ru.
