In almost every city in South America you can find monument to Simon Bolivar, who liberated this region from the rule of imperial Spain. And the artist Mimmo Rubino offers a new look at these objects, transforming them from pompous monumental statues into public and cultural spaces.
Mimmo Rubino laments that Simon Bolivar liberated South America at the beginning of the nineteenth century, making it independent from Spain, but after that he seized power on the continent and declared himself a dictator. Moreover, these usurpatory "habits" of the Latin American military and political legend are manifested to this day - many of the best places in the cities of the region are built up with stone and metal statues of Bolivar.
Bolivar's sculpture is located, among other things, in one of the central squares of the city of Panama, the capital of the republic of the same name. Moreover, this monumental complex itself is so wide spread that it captured a huge part of the area. And Mammio Rubino decided to rectify this situation by slightly transforming the sculptural composition and turning it into a public and cultural space called Simon Bolivar Steps.
The artist installed a pyramid-like structure on the degrees of this sculpture. Thus, according to Mimmo Rubino himself, he wanted to emphasize the imperious status of Simon Bolivar (and the pyramid in modern symbolism is just a symbol of power and conquest), but at the same time to show the functional emptiness of this monument itself and the staircase that leads to it …
Mimmo Rubino is glad that thanks to his work, the Bolivar monument in Panama and its environs has turned from a lifeless pretentious space into a youth leisure center (this pyramid was chosen by skaters) and a small art exhibition. Moreover, this object was included in the list of art points Bienal del Sur en Panama 2013 (Biennale of Contemporary Art in Panama 2013).

Sale of things confiscated from Jews and other hard-hitting facts during the Nazi occupation of France
