The elephant population in Asia is decreasing every year. But in London this year there will be an unprecedented invasion of these animals. Moreover, these processes are interconnected. After all, London elephants will appear on the streets as a sign of support for their Asian counterparts. And, it is clear that these elephants are sculptures, not real animals.
The decline in the elephant population in Asia is occurring at a rapid pace. Thanks to destructive human activities, the number of elephants on this continent has decreased tenfold in the twentieth century. And, if no conservation efforts are made, this mammal is expected to be extinct by 2050.
Therefore, in London 2010 will be the Year of the Elephants. During the so-called "parade of elephants" 260 sculptures of these huge animals of various shapes, sizes and colors from artists from all over the world will be exhibited in the city.
The Elephant Parade will end with a large-scale charity auction at which all these figurines will be auctioned off, and the money received will go to programs to protect this endangered species.
One of the most valuable lots will be the Elephant Taxi sculpture by artist Benjamin Shine. It is expected to be auctioned for around £ 2 million.
