Italian Maurizio Anzeri strongly disagrees that embroidery is not a man's business. The author gladly picks up a needle and thread, but as a basis for needlework, he takes not fabric, but old photographs. And to be honest, despite the bright colors of the threads, his works look surprisingly gloomy and inspire a lot of thought.
Maurizio Anzeri embroidery transforms old faded photographs into works of art with a whole new meaning. “The deeply personal embroidery process is a ritual of creating and changing the stories and past of these people,” says the author. At the same time, Maurizio Anzeri affects only the faces of the heroes of the photographs, leaving everything else intact. Perhaps each of his stitches is a kind of symbol of the moments of someone's life - bright, joyful, happy, or, on the contrary, those that you want to forget about. Like masks, embroideries by Maurizio Anzeri hide the real faces of people from the viewer and leave more guesswork and assumptions than concrete truthful information.
The author assures that in his works he seeks to explore the essence of things in their material manifestation. “I draw inspiration from my own experiences and observations of how human bodies are viewed as living graphic symbols in other cultures.” Maurizio Anzeri was born in 1969 in Italy and currently lives and works in London. The author has a master's degree in sculpture from The Slade School of Fine Art (London).
