London-based artist Christiaan Nagel is trying to prove that street art is not only graffiti, and that an ordinary person on his way to work is not just a passer-by with the help of shocking art performances consisting of giant mushrooms in bizarre colors.
A well-known abstract artist, musician, and now also the author of numerous art objects, Nagel chose the walls and roofs of ordinary London houses as a platform for his art performances. Its mushrooms "grow" all over the East End, attracting the attention of the residents of the British capital.
Two years ago, he prepared an installation for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton: he placed his favorite art objects - mushrooms right in Hyde Park. True, the next day all 10 large-scale creations were removed by the guardians of order. What happened did not surprise or upset Nagel: street art is a young trend, unusual for the inhabitants of conservative Britain.
Only by 2008 did the "illegal" art have its first buyers - private collectors and simply connoisseurs of beauty.
Nagel, by his own admission, draws inspiration from surrealism and pop art. He interprets the "unattainability" of art literally, placing his creations at great heights and in unusual places. The material for his work is polyurethane - ordinary polyurethane foam.
Why mushrooms? The artist admits that there is no super-idea here: he is warmed by the thought that the most ordinary people on their way to work will be able to admire his works, which appear like … mushrooms after rain.
Every street artist has his own style. This style is recognizable, it is a kind of author's brand, the mark of distinction is what allows you to unmistakably recognize the master. If Christian Nagel has giant mushrooms as his author's brand, then the works of the artist Lavalet from Grenoble are unusual mix of graphics and posters.
