I think almost everyone of us knows something about England, from textbooks or from our own experience: changeable weather, monarchy, tasteless beer, oatmeal, sir … But what we may not know about it is that there are thousands of people walk on a giant mosaic made up of over hundreds of thousands of pieces. And these pieces are nothing more than photographs.
Mosaic is a very specific art form that has developed over the centuries. There are now many modifications of this ancient art. For example, a mosaic of pieces of marmalade from Peter Roch or a pixel mosaic from Aria Krapnik. Now you can surprise in this area of art either by the unusualness of the material, or by the size. British artist Helen Marshall succeeded in both.
This gigantic photo album is located in an English place called the Wes Midlands, in the city of Birmingham, and in its scale, perhaps, is not inferior to Stonehenge. True, unlike Stonehenge, in this case it is at least clear whose job it is. Helen Marshall worked with mosaic specialist PollyTiles and used photographs brought in by different people. In terms of size, this miracle occupies an area comparable to three tennis courts. The work is based on a portrait of an amateur boxer named Arthur James Bunce, made back in 1927. The most gigantic photo album made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
This is not Helen's only work of this kind. In addition to huge photo album the girl is known for her work “Poppy of human faces” (The People's Poppy), consisting of 3500 photographs. And these are not random people - they were all helped by the charity "The Royal British Legion" (The Royal British Legion), or they were people who support it. Actually, the goal of this work was to inspire people for charity. The People's Poppy has exhibited in several UK cities: Cardiff, Manchester, Liverpool, Cornwell, Sheffield and London.
Helen Marshall was born in the UK in 1971 and works there to this day. She is mainly engaged in photography, design and glassware, but in addition, she is interested in various types of installations. You can find out more about her, look at her work and read about her on her official website.
