From Pushkin's little tragedy "Mozart and Salieri", one can conclude that verifying harmony with algebra is a thankless task, worthy only of a dry pedant. Either art has since become drier, or algebra has significantly expanded its capabilities - but now algebra and harmony get along much better than in the days of Pushkin or Mozart. Proof of this - the abstract paintings of the artist-mathematician Thomas Briggs.
The creative method of Thomas Briggs was born out of mathematics and observation of nature: the artist claims that his works balance on the brink between chaos and intelligent order, which are equally inherent in the universe. The basis for the mathematical apparatus that he uses in his work was the description of real processes, such as, for example, turbulent flows.
However, Briggs's technique allows him to control what comes out of his "pen": he sets the color and linear dominants of his abstract paintings himself. It is the artist who decides which results are interesting for artistic implementation, and which are not; thus, in essence, his work is no different from the skill of other creators of abstractions, who, through the confusion of lines and colors, are guided only by a strict artistic taste.
According to Briggs, he gets the most interesting results "on the edge" of a chaotic sample. Then, with the help of matrices, functions and imagination, he creates his canvases. By the way, the real size of these paintings is a little less than a square meter, and the thickness of the lines is 0, 2-0, 3 millimeters - like the nib of an ordinary pen. Thus, most of his paintings can be attributed to graphics.
Thomas Briggs is not the only author in contemporary art who is trying to apply mathematics to understand and recreate the beauty of nature: let's remember Nikki Graziano, who searches for functions in bushes, mountains and beaches. And such attempts are sometimes very productive: many of Briggs' abstract paintings really cause genuine interest and even admiration.
