Contests in the world of photography are always interesting, because thanks to them we get the opportunity to see truly professional, high-quality and creative pictures. And the competition Small Worldheld annually by the company Nikon, allows you to see also what in ordinary life we are not at all able to see. We present to your attention the best works of photographic art of 2010, made with a microscope.
The Nikon Small World Competition has been held since 1974, and anyone can take part in it. The subject of the images is not limited, and the authors are also free to choose the technique of microphotography. The winners are selected by an authoritative jury composed of renowned experts in photography and microphotography. But in order to participate in the competition, it is not at all necessary to be a professional: over the long history of Small World, the works of ordinary amateurs have been repeatedly recognized as the best.
According to the organizers of the competition, microphotography is a technical document of great importance for the development of science and industries. However, a good photomicrograph is not just a picture taken under a microscope, but also "a work whose structure, color, composition and content are an object of beauty, open to several levels of understanding and appreciation."
In 2010, the winner was Jonas King, who submitted a 100-fold enlargement of a mosquito's heart. Second place went to Dr. Hideo Otsuna for his 5-day-old zebrafish head. The third prize went to Oliver Braubach, who photographed the olfactory bulbs of the same zebrafish.
