Rarely does a stranger visit the largest landfill in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. But then thousands and thousands of people around the world can see rubbish from this dump. And this is the merit of the artist Vik Munizwho uses this waste in his works from the series "WASTE LAND".
We have already repeatedly talked on the Kulturologia. Ru website about how different artists manage to create objects of art from garbage. Examples include trash paintings by Jane Perkins, trash installation Fragile by Brian Armstrong and Peter Gibson, and marine litter sculptures “Washed Ashore” by Angela Pozzi (Angela Pozzi).
Creates works from rubbish and Brazilian artist Vic Muniz. Moreover, from the special garbage he collected at the largest landfill in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The main goal of these works is to draw public attention to the problem of pollution of the mentioned South American metropolis, suffocating from the garbage drowning in it.
In the works from the series "WASTE LAND" ("Garbage country") you can recognize the great paintings of the classical masters of painting. For example, the painting "Death of Marat", the image of Medusa the Gorgon, the work of Andy Warhol and even "The Last Supper" by the great Leonardo da Vinci.
The sketches of these garbage paintings were originally made from peanut butter, coffee, tea and other similar materials found by Munis in a landfill, and then "weighted" with other, voluminous garbage. Sizes of paintings from the WASTE LAND series vary from small sizes (such works are quite possible hang in art galleries) to the huge building that occupies entire floors, which houses the art studio of Vic Munis.
It remains to be regretted that all the garbage stored in millions of landfills around the planet cannot be turned into works of art, which are welcomed by the best art museums in the world!
