The village of Kivik is a small town in the south of Sweden. Most of the year its inhabitants live a quiet measured life, but everything changes at the end of September, when the annual apple fair is held in small Kivik. Over the course of two days, the village with a population of 1000 people is visited by about 20 thousand tourists - and they all claim that at this time there is something to see here.
The main highlight of each fair that attracts the attention of tourists is the incredible apple paintings. A huge image is created for the opening of the festival and remains its central element for two days. It is made as follows: thousands of nails are attached to a wooden canvas base, and then apples are planted on them. Tons of fruits of a wide variety of varieties and colors are used to create fruit masterpieces, but the result is worth it.
The number of apples involved in composing one picture depends on the size of the canvas and can reach 75 thousand pieces. The color scheme of the painting determines the number of varieties used - as a rule, from 6 to 15.
The author of most of the apple paintings is the Swedish sculptor Helge Lundstrom, who calls himself "the ancestor of apple painting" and "the best apple artist in the world." Perhaps he has the right to these words, because in 1998 his picture of apples was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world. Recently, the sculptor's daughter, Emma Karp, has joined the creation of the paintings.
The Apple Fair is held in Kivik as a harvest festival. The idea to "decorate" each festival with fruit paintings arose in 1988, which means that the villagers have admired the unusual works of art 21 times already. At the fair, you can not only see apple paintings, but also buy apples of various varieties, as well as all kinds of products made from these fruits.
