Taking portraits of famous artists depicting kings, princesses, countesses and viscounts as a basis, the artist Valerie Leonard transforms them a little, transforming people into animals or, conversely, displacing people with animals who proudly take their places, dressed in human clothing. Now other Henry VIII, Marie Antoinette, Anne of Cleves, Madame Pompadour, Catherine Parr and Queen Victoria are looking at us from the pictures.
Many can in Photoshop make it so that, say, instead of the face of King Henry VIII, the muzzle of a bulldog flaunted. But the difference is that Valerie Leonard does it just fine. Her finished painting is honed to perfection. Color, contours, angles, everything converges and everything is in harmony. Photos of dogs and cats merge with the famous canvases, giving birth to a new hybrid. The artist does not just "stick" two pictures together, she painstakingly works, paying attention to even the smallest details. Sometimes you have to create a new outfit to match the proportions of the depicted animal, sometimes you need to make a completely new background in order to depict the fluffy faces in the best possible way. It usually takes one week to create the perfect picture that you can't find fault with.
Valerie Leonard creates such paintings, first of all, for pet owners who want to have a memory of their pet, and also as gifts for simply animal lovers.
Valerie Leonard earned her BA in Fine Arts from Hornsey College of Arts, England and studied graphic design in Switzerland. Upon her return to England, she was invited to work at the publishing house Petersburg Press. Since 1973, the artist has lived in the United States, and is also engaged in the design and invention of toys.
