Like any woman, Sophie DeFrancesca loves beautiful outfits in particular and fashion in general. But for some reason our heroine did not dare to embody her design ideas in traditional fabric. Maybe because there are a lot of fabric dresses in the world, but her wire outfits are unique.
Like a seamstress creating dresses, Sophie sews her stunning outfits from galvanized wire and metallic threads. Such harsh material often leaves scratches on a woman's bare hands, but for Sophie these are trifles compared to the ability to create. “I have dreamed about it since childhood,” the author says about his hobby.
In her art, Sophie embodies the relationship between mother and daughter, which she herself lost at the age of ten. Her mother, whom the girl loved and respected very much, died of cancer. Sophie spent hours looking at pictures of her mother and her gorgeous outfits, then took her Barbie doll and tried to sew her something similar. “It helps me keep in touch with my mom,” says DeFrancesca, who eventually replaced the fabric with wire.
“I want the audience to tap into their imaginations,” says DeFrancesca of his metal sculptures, bringing to life in their forms the days long gone. "I want people to imagine the lives that these dresses have lived or could have lived, or think about their own life experiences against the backdrop of this cultural context."
Sophie DeFrancesca says that her wire sculptures are a kind of metal cage, a trap. She revives her ideal memories in them, but at the same time she perfectly understands that life is far from ideal.
Sophie lives in Toronto (Canada) with her husband and two children. More information about the author on the site.
