Everyone knows that origami requires a flat square sheet of white or colored paper. Everyone except Craig Sonnenfeld … Apparently, they forgot to tell him that he just needs paper, and he creates amazing origami from … dollar bills.
Origami has long ceased to be a purely Japanese art form, becoming a world cultural heritage. And, moreover, the greatest origami masters do not live in Japan at all, but in the countries of the Western World. Examples include the works of the American Brian Chan and the European Sipho Mabona.
So Craig Sonnenfield also has no direct relation to Japan. He was born and raised in the United States of America, and therefore his origami figures are American through and through. Moreover, "thoroughly American" is not a metaphor at all.
After all, Sonnenfield creates origami from dollar bills. Moreover, he does not skimp on this at all, therefore, the whole range of American banknotes from 1 to 100 dollars is used in his works. This, of course, is not a platinum skull with diamonds, like Damien Hirst, worth tens of millions of dollars, but also a serious auto-investment in creativity.
Of course, in terms of the complexity of Sonnenfield's work, it cannot be called anything outstanding. These are quite simple figures on completely different topics: animals (camel, hippo and even dinosaur), insects (spider, scorpion, ant, dragonfly), household items (TV, camera, car). Nothing outstanding. But it is precisely the material from which these origami figures are made that makes Craig Sonnenfield's work stand out among the works of other masters in this art form.
