Despite the fact that among the works submitted for the competition there were many exotic images of wildlife, the main prize went to 20-year-old Billy Cloughham, the author of the photograph, which captured the blackbird against the background of an ordinary garden. Judge Tim Harris of the Nature Picture Library noted that “Billy’s image is an extraordinary look at a bird we all know well. Gardens are like an oasis in today's urbanized world, and this great shot shows the viewer that you don't have to travel to hard-to-reach places to capture interesting animal behavior."
