Responsible for announcing the nominees were Kumail Nanjiani, an American actor of Pakistani origin who is best known for the comedy series Silicon Valley, and Tracy Ellis, an American actress who starred in the series Girlfriends.
The Oscar is awarded in only 24 nominations. These include "Best Foreign Language Film", "Best Director", "Best Film" and others. Separate awards are given each year to Best Actor and Best Actress. Only films that were shown in Los Angeles County for at least seven days in a row before the ceremony are eligible to apply for this prestigious film award.
The Best Film category can include from five to ten films. In all other nominations, the maximum number of applicants is limited to five. After the announcement of the nominees, a second round of voting will take place. Members of the American Film Academy of the Arts will take part in it. This second stage will last until February 19, when the winners will be determined.
