What event do they usually want to celebrate their anniversary? And if we are talking about its 100th anniversary? Alas, for 99-year-old Italian Antonio S. this holiday was overshadowed by heartfelt drama: he just divorced his 96-year-old wife Rosa after a big family scandal.

Shortly before Christmas in 2011, Antonio decided to put things in order for the arrival of guests and began, as is often the case in such situations, sorting out the contents of the drawers in the closet. Suddenly he found in the farthest corner of one of the drawers a whole bunch of old letters. Antonio opened the letters and with surprise, turning into horror, realized that these letters were written by his wife to her lover.

Antonio took the letters to his wife, 96-year-old Rose, and demanded an explanation from her. Rose burst into tears and admitted that indeed, 60 years before that, in the 1940s, she was cheating on her husband. Rose sobbed and asked for forgiveness from her husband, but he was shocked by what was happening and was determined to file for divorce.

Antonio and Rosa met and married in the 1930s, when Antonio was serving in the police force and was assigned to Rosa's hometown of Naples. At the time the truth was revealed, the couple had been married for 77 years, they had five children and 12 grandchildren. Antonio and Rosa even managed to become great-grandfather and great-grandmother by this time.

The press does not know whether the letters found were "the last straw" in a series of quarrels or for Antonio this old infidelity became a bolt from the blue, but the Italian did not postpone the case and immediately filed for divorce, in December 2011, just on Christmas Eve. Yes, perhaps he did not have much to live - no one could predict this - but the man believed that it was simply impossible to act otherwise.

Divorce in 90+ years for most countries seems to be something unthinkable, but for Italy, this behavior is not new. Loaded with tons of divorce documents, the Italian authorities changed the law in 2015 and changed the time frame for considering divorce cases from three years to just six months.

"Today we are faced with a situation that we have never met before," says Gian Ettore Gassani, founder of the Italian Academy of Law on Family Matters. "People over 80 are actively filing for divorce to start a new life." In his report, Gian also recalled the case of a 90-year-old man who demanded a divorce in order to remarry a woman 30 years his junior. But generally speaking, the tendency is that it is women aged 65+ who most often wish to divorce their husbands.

At the moment, Antonio and Rosa hold the palm as the oldest couple to file for divorce. Prior to that, this record was held by a couple from the UK, who divorced after 36 years of marriage. At that time, Bertie and Jesse were both 98 years old, and for both of them this was their second marriage.

According to German law, a divorcing couple must share their joint property 50/50. One German decided that this was a perfectly fair demand, and how he decided to share what he owned with his wife was real creative solution.
