Contemporary Czech sculptor David Černý is well known in the art world for his provocative and controversial sculptures and installations that combine humor and satire on social and political themes. David Cherny declared himself as a scandalous artist back in 1991, when, together with his creative friends, he committed an artistic act of vandalism, painting a Soviet tank in a bright pink "candy" color.
David Cerny himself does not like being called an artist; he sees himself as a simple sculptor, whose work is driven by constant and all-encompassing anger. His sculptures are a riot and shock, often provoking harsh public criticism, but at the same time, some of his works, installed in Prague and other cities in the Czech Republic, have received wide recognition and have become vibrant, frequently visited attractions. For example, the Prague Television Tower, where babies climb up, is the most popular tourist attraction.
For the first time, David Cerny became famous for the fiberglass sculpture "Quo Vadis", which is a car on human legs, instead of real wheels. This sculpture, dedicated to political refugees from East Germany, was installed at the German Embassy in Prague.
An equally popular sculptural work by David Cerny is the monument to St. Wenceslas, riding on the belly of a dead horse and suspended by the legs of a horse. This sculpture is a metaphorical criticism of the Czech government.
Speaking about the most famous works of David Cerny, one cannot fail to mention the sculptural work "The Suspended Man", which depicts the hanging figure of Sigmund Freud in full growth.
