In different cities of the world there are so-called "singing fountains" - structures that play in jets to a variety of music. But the 303 Gallery in New York has recently appeared the fountainwhich is not musical but sound … Its creator is an American artist Doug Aitken.
It used to be that fountains were the main city sources of water. Now they exist mainly for the aesthetic pleasure of the townspeople. An example is the Dubai Light and Music Fountain, which puts on an enchanting visual show every evening.
Of course, the Sonic Fountain, which has recently appeared in New York's 303 Gallery, is very far in size and impression on people from its Dubai counterpart. But it also has a completely different function! After all, this is an art installation created by artist Doug Aitken.
The Sonic Fountain is not designed for a wow effect at all. This is a meditative installation that you can admire for hours.
It consists of five pipes suspended from the ceiling, from which water flows, and a small round pool located in a crater specially hollowed out for this purpose in the concrete floor of the gallery.
This crater is equipped with sound amplifying equipment. So drops and whole jets of water, falling into this pool, make a rather noticeable noise. And, depending on which part of the fountain they fell into, as well as on their intensity, this sound can be completely different.
Taken together, all this creates a special "symphony", natural and beautiful. For some, it is similar to human breathing, for someone - with the sound of rain, someone hears river flows and even waterfalls in it. Everyone has their own associations!
Moreover, viewers who find themselves in the hall of the 303 Gallery, where the Sonic Fountain installation is located, can themselves adjust the intensity of water flow from its pipes and, therefore, control the “symphony” of this sound fountain.
