“The P. I. W. O Project”, created by the efforts of the students of the Wroclaw Polytechnic University, despite its name, has nothing in common with the intoxicating drink. In fact, this is an enchanting installation, during which an ordinary dormitory building turns into a huge display for several minutes, where burning windows form various patterns.
A non-standard idea came to mind of one of the university students, Filip Rus. He recalls how he once passed by a dormitory building and noticed how the lights burning in the windows form a random pattern in the dark. "What happens if you try to control these lights?" - with this thought, the work on the project began. The history of The P. I. W. O Project has four installations: in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
How does it work? In each room of the dormitory, a structure invented by university students is installed. It consists of several ordinary light bulbs, painted in different colors, and light modules, which are wired and wirelessly connected to the host computer. University students say that the very idea of using the building as a display for various installations is not new, but emphasizes that all the equipment for The P. I. W. O Project was invented and created by them personally.
But why P. I. W. O? The authors themselves decipher the name of the project as follows: Potężny Indeksowany Wyświetlacz Oknowy, which can be translated as “large indexed window display”. Although, most likely, in the beginning there was still “beer”, and only then the corresponding word was selected for each letter.
The P. I. W. O Project is a non-profit project. The installation is staged every year in May during the student festival, and the students tell that the most important thing for them is not money, but the pleasure that they get while working on the project and the audience watching the show.
