A series of works by a Canadian photojournalist Pascal Dumont concisely entitled "Hostel" … This is an unadorned story about how students of Moscow universities live.
The years spent in the hostel are remembered by people for the rest of their lives. This is an invaluable experience of collective survival, because students, as a rule, share all the sorrows and joys together. Either they prepare for the session with the whole block, then they walk on holidays and arrange gatherings for no reason, then they jointly buy groceries for the rest of the money in order to reach the scholarship.
Pascal Dumot is a Canadian by birth, works in the largest English-language edition of Russia "The Moscow Times". He loves to travel, and during his life managed to visit 45 countries. Russia conquered him with its cultural traditions, and the phenomenon of communal apartments pushed him to create a separate photo cycle.
The author rightly notes that the main rule that students follow is: "Create housing in a limited space, using limited resources." Despite the abundance of everyday difficulties, the residents of the hostel try to make their rooms as comfortable as possible, organize a personal space for sports and creativity, develop certain rules that make it possible for different people to coexist more or less tolerably.
By the way, despite the fact that European hostels are much more civilized and adapted for life, local students do not get bored there either. For example, in the Dutch town of Enschede, students will be happy to climb onto the dormitory building, the wall of which is equipped as a climbing training wall.
