Russian filmmakers very often use the ideas of their foreign colleagues and shoot remakes of foreign films. However, domestic films have recently reached the level when they have become interesting to viewers in other countries. And foreign filmmakers buy the rights to adapt Russian films and TV series and present their projects to the audience.
Father's daughters
This series, in fact, became the first Russian original project. The series "Daddy's Daughters" has shown very good ratings for almost six years. Two years after the release of the first season, the German channel Das Vierte, owned by our compatriot Dmitry Lesnevsky, became interested in “daddy's daughters”. As a result, the series Full House of Daughters was released in Germany. In the German adaptation, the Vasnetsovs became the Vogel family. True, on German television, the project lasted only 35 episodes and did not at all have such a success as in Russia.
Major
The drama directed by Yuri Bykov, released in 2013, attracted the interest of Western filmmakers. And on February 23, 2018, Netflix released Seven Seconds, the official remake of The Major, on its streaming platform. The director of the original film was extremely disappointed with the series, as he considered it too simplistic. In fact, only an outset remained from the original, when a police officer knocked down a man, and his colleagues tried to hush up the case. In the remake, the action takes place in Jersey City, and the victim was a black teenager. Filming was planned for the second season of the series, subject to the success of the first, but Netflix decided not to renew it.

The romantic comedy by Pavel Ruminov with Danila Kozlovsky in the title role was not very successful in the Russian box office, but the Lithuanian remake "How to get it back in 7 days" directed by Andrius Zyurauskas was a phenomenal success. At the same time, the Lithuanian adaptation is very close to the original, and the main role in it was played by a very famous stand-up comedian in Lithuania, Justinas Yankevicius. It was thanks to his participation, according to critics, that the picture attracted attention and fell in love with many viewers.
Bitterly
The rights to adapt Zhora Kryzhovnikov's comedy were sold to a Mexican film studio in 2016. The tape "Until the wedding do us part" was released in Mexico in August 2020, and Timur Bekmambetov's company Bazelevs directly participated in its production. The original director himself reviewed the draft materials and made corrections. Some scenes that were not relevant for the country were cut out, but in general the plot repeats the original script, and the Mexican audience quite favorably received the picture of Santiago Limón.
Kitchen
This series can be called the most successful project on the international market. In 2013, CBS International became interested in Russian situational comedy, which bought the rights to the international distribution of Kukhni. Thanks to the deal, remakes of the series were released in six countries: Georgia, Estonia, Slovakia, Croatia, Portugal and Greece. An animated version of the first season was released in Ukraine, while in China, work is underway on adaptation. At the same time, in all countries, the remake, which tells about the backstage of expensive restaurants, turned out to be very successful and loved by the audience.
Mommy
The viewers fell in love with the Russian-Ukrainian series, all three seasons it showed very good ratings. The funny and at the same time sad story of the three friends interested Mongolian filmmakers, who bought the rights to adapt the comedy and released a remake on the screens. Unfortunately, nothing is known about whether the remake was as successful as its Russian original.
Interns
The series about a charismatic and talented rude doctor aired on Russian air for six years, from 2010 to 2016, and in 2014 the adaptation rights were acquired by the Lithuanian company Videometra, which released 279 episodes from 2014 to 2017 on TV3. In 2016, TNT TV channel sold the rights to adapt the series to China, but so far its further fate is unknown. Viewers who were able to see the Lithuanian remake paid attention to the almost complete identity of the re-filmed version to the original.
Yolki
Despite the fact that there is no official remake of this tape, in China in 2015 the film "Crazy New Year" was released, the plot of which almost completely repeats the format of the original. True, he did not have much success at the box office. The creators of the Chinese version preferred not to comment on the release of their picture, and Russian filmmakers, in general, have nothing to complain about. In the Chinese version of Yolok, there are no direct borrowings, but the melodramatic intonation and format of the original are almost entirely recreated. By the way, Eva Jean, who became a producer, screenwriter and one of the directors, negotiated with Timur Bekmambetov in 2013 to acquire the rights for adaptation.
Foreign directors have repeatedly turned to familiar Soviet films. In these remakes, the action is often transferred to another place, and sometimes to another time, but the storyline of the picture remains very recognizable. Foreign remakes based on Soviet films, became quite popular in the West.
