A certain picture has been divided into many pieces with ingenious notches, so that each piece has its own place. The task is to collect what the authors of the puzzle have depicted. This is the usual approach to puzzles. But there is also an alternative - the method of young children and the German artist Gerhard Mayer: they create their own canvases from these fragments. The result is landscapes in an impressionistic haze and works with elements of surrealism.
49-year-old artist Gerhard Mayer lives and works in Nuremberg. His current hobby is huge pictures from puzzles, mosaic art objects up to 18 meters in length! One such monumental painting can occupy an entire wall in a gallery. And it consists of thousands of fragments that originally "lived" in different sets. What is the message of the postmodern works of Gerhard Mayer or the photo puzzles of Roberts Bierse?
Each box with a scattering of cardboard chips is not just a set from which a picture can be folded. This is a model of someone else's picture of the world. In order to restore it, you need to penetrate into the logic of another person, to understand how he connects thoughts, connects the bricks of the universe. The concepts and ideas of each person act as a kind of fragments of his own puzzle.
Collecting a puzzle is getting to know another person with an unusual worldview. Studying someone else's creativity, comprehending someone else's philosophy, the student perceives the world through someone else's eyes, puts together a puzzle with a picture drawn before him. Then he collects another puzzle - by another author. And in the meantime, he thinks about what his own picture of the world is.
Since all the words have already been said, and all thoughts have already entered the bright minds of philosophers, it remains only to admit that we, willingly or unwillingly, borrow parts of the worldview from others, creating our own picture from puzzles. Of course, his own to the extent that the centon belongs to the pen of a witty man who pulled quotes from his predecessors and combined them into one poem. And organic to the extent that we took care of fitting the pieces borrowed from other people's puzzles.
Of course, the new combination of parts has its own charm: for example, the motives of love lyrics have long been known to everyone, but the author's skill is to combine and develop them in an original way. Not only select fragments from different sets, but also make sure that there are no gaps and overlaps. This requires painstaking work, as does the creation of original paintings from standard puzzles.
