The culture of Greece attracts lovers of antiquities, because to this day you can see the most interesting examples of ancient art here. In the ancient city Paphos in Cyprus, which was once the capital, have survived beautiful mosaics from the Roman erathat adorned the floor in the houses of Dionysus, Theseus, Eon and Orpheus. They were discovered only in the 1960s, excavations are ongoing to this day.
Houses with luxurious mosaics belonged to representatives of the wealthy class. They received their names in modern times in accordance with what is depicted in the mosaics. The Greeks most often depicted scenes from myths, as well as portraits of gods, goddesses and heroes, but sometimes the plot of the mosaic could be a scene from everyday life.
To create the mosaics, they used marble, white, black and gray pebbles and multi-colored glass. The image was laid out over raw lime. The most impressive and largest mosaic was discovered by archaeologists in the house of Dionysus. One of the scenes shows the god of winemaking along with Ikarios, the bearded old man who sheltered Dionysus in Athens. In gratitude, Dionysus taught him the art of winemaking. In the house of Theseus, a mosaic was found depicting his fight with the minotaur, in the house of Orpheus - an image of a musician surrounded by animals. Mosaics are of global importance, they are included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Values.
