This is exactly what happened to 63-year-old Lin Slater, who was waiting in the center of New York for her girlfriend during a lunch break, while journalists mistakenly took her for a model or fashion designer and surrounded her on all sides.
“The journalists surrounded me and started taking pictures,” Lin recalls. “Two Japanese journalists started asking me questions. Tourists followed them and started filming me, too. They thought they had met some significant figure from the fashion industry. I was a little confused, and just at that moment my friend came and we both began to laugh at the situation. She told me: "Wow, you suddenly became a style icon!"
Then, surrounded by journalists, Lin had to almost make excuses and say that although she is not directly related to fashion (it was during New York Fashion Week), she still has something to brag to people. This is how the Instagram account @iconaccidental appeared, which today has more than 138 thousand subscribers. "I have always liked fashion and unusual clothes. But I am a teacher, and my profession means that I have to follow the rules and look accordingly. This incident with journalists inspired me and I decided to start my own blog about fashion, in which I could be I named it Accidental Icon - "Accidental Icon."
Lin herself now not only teaches, but is also engaged in the modeling business: she has already signed contracts with a number of companies, including Elite London, Mango and Uniqlo.
Confuse Lin Slater (Lyn Slater) with a style icon was no wonder: the woman works as a teacher at Fordham University and always looks, as they say, "with a needle." She doesn't like it when women are told how to look, and especially when they are told to "look appropriate for their age." "I think that if you are comfortable in your clothes, then what difference does it make how old you are and who this outfit is for - you will look great."
"Fashion and my style help me fight this terrifying feeling that you become invisible as you age," says Lin. At the same time, she does not try to look younger and even refuses to dye her gray hair, she in every possible way emphasizes that it is a bad tendency to ignore older women. And interestingly, most of her Instagram followers are 25-35 year old girls. “Girls often come up to me on the street and ask what I'm wearing. Young ladies write to me on Instagram, saying that they used to be afraid of getting older, but now, looking at my photos, this fear is gone. We can live with our inner a rebel at any age - and, accordingly, we can look good at any age."
Lin's favorite designers are Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo. "The work of these designers forms the base of my wardrobe. I build my entire style around these things." When describing her style, Lin usually uses four words: minimalism, avant-garde, monochrome and casual. When she was asked what she thinks about the phrase “dress according to your age,” Lin was indignant: “Are you seriously asking me this? indicates to elderly women that their time has passed, that no one expects anything from them."
