Video: 15 foreign films that Russian viewers liked more than foreign ones
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
Sometimes it happens that foreign films receive a much warmer welcome in Russia than in their homeland. This, of course, does not mean that they are not watched there at all, but they are rated much worse. It is not uncommon for our film to be considered a cult film, but in native places the score is below average. In Russia, the rating is mainly determined using an assessment on "Kinopoisk", and abroad they are guided by "IMDb". It is believed that a good grade starts at seven points, and anything lower is already a "C". So what films do we have different views on? This article contains films that earned a mark above seven in Russia, while abroad they were rated much worse.
Police Academy 2: Their First Mission (1985)
Theft and robbery of one gang do not allow the city to live in peace. The Commissioner gives the task to Captain Pete Lassard: to reduce the crime rate in a month. And his career is at stake, because if he fails, he will be fired. Worst of all, he will be replaced by his deputy, whom he hates. Having asked for six new police assistants, Pete has no choice but to deal with the bad guys, ending this group once and for all.
It is worth noting that in our country the audience appreciated the first three parts of the film "Police Academy". In total, seven of them were filmed. Abroad, only the first part was appreciated, and then the rating began to fall. And from the fourth part, the Russians no longer indulged the film with high ratings.
Beethoven (1992)
This family movie is about one of the St. Bernard puppies stolen from a pet store. He escapes from thieves and ends up in the house of the Newton family. The children and wife are delighted with the new household, but at first the father was not very happy with the pet. Beethoven becomes a real friend for the family, especially after rescuing his daughter, who almost drowned in the pool. Once at an appointment at the veterinary point, the dog gets to the veterinarian, who is engaged in terrible experiments on animals. He says the dog is dangerous and needs to be put to sleep.
I am glad that after passing the test, Beethoven was still able to escape from the hands of an evil "doctor" who was sent to trial for cruelty to animals. By the way, the American Veterinary Association sent an angry letter to the head of the American Film Association that she was offended by the fact that veterinarians were exposed in such a negative way. Perhaps this influenced such a low rating of this family film at home. But in Russia, the audience liked this motion picture.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Both the first and second parts of this film are cult in our country. They especially come with a bang on New Year's holidays in Russia, where everyone knows the story about Kevin. In the first part, the parents forget the child at home, and in the second part, the same child is causing a stir in the huge city of New York, and now he has a lot of money for his entertainment. But the fun did not last long, because Kevin met his old "friends" who escaped from prison. Now they start hunting for each other.
The American audience did not really like this story, especially the second part of it. Perhaps Americans are frightened by the idea that you can just forget a child at home or in a strange city. They are frightened by the dangers and adventures of a little boy. But in Russia they took the plot more easily and positively. Although in any case, seriously, Kevin's parents are far from ideal parents.
"Bodyguard" (1992)
This film is one of the favorites in our country. The story tells of a security officer who blames himself for the assassination attempt on the president. He decides to leave the service. Now Frank is guarding singer and actress Rachel Marron, who receives threatening letters. The new work did not attract Frank very much at first, but over time, a spark runs between the main characters, which develops into love.
In Russia, they love not only the film itself, but also the song "I Will Always Love You", which was performed in it in a filigree performance by Whitney Houston. By the way, this track is very popular today. Abroad, this legendary song also fell in love, but the film did not touch the hearts of the audience.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
The film is based on the popular computer game "Mortal Kombat". The plot of this movie is that a couple of centuries ago a magician from another world took over a tournament of warriors in order to sow chaos among us. Now three warriors will have to engage in a deadly battle with the enemy in order to save our world and all of humanity.
Filmmakers rarely succeed in filming computer games well, but in this case they did it. The only drawback is that in those years the special effects were not at the level required by the script. But the Russians love this game so much that they are ready to close their eyes to this shortcoming. But abroad the viewer is more demanding, for which he rated this film below average. It should be noted that the second part, released two years later, was not appreciated even in our country.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
The story is as old as the world, a girl from a respectable family falls in love with a handsome rebel, a professional dancer. The plot may be trivial, but it's forgivable when the charming Patrick Swayze stars in the lead role. Also, the viewer was not left indifferent by the dances and music in this work. In general, those who love romantic films should like everything here.
In Russia, the film found a greater response in the hearts of TV viewers. But in the west it was rated a little cooler. Rumor has it that when the producer saw the footage for the first time, he did not like everything so much that he offered to burn the film in order to somehow recoup the shooting with the help of insurance. But, fortunately, the producer was not listened to. As a result, the film even took Oscar.
Autumn in New York (2000)
The soulful and atmospheric melodrama conveying the spirit of autumn New York was more to the liking in Russia than in the United States. Perhaps this is all due to the fact that the favorite of Russian women, Richard Gere and the charming Winona Ryder, star in the lead roles. Probably, the audience abroad did not have enough feelings, some kind of chemistry, between the main characters. In the USA, by the way, the budget of this film paid off only half. Also, this film work was nominated for the Golden Raspberry anti-award. Despite the negative criticism from the West, our viewers liked this beautiful but sad film.
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (2003)
This comedy is about a fanatical journalist who adores her job so much that she is ready to experience the material she writes for a fashion magazine. In this work, she must collect the main mistakes that women make when dealing with men. So she has ten days to use these mistakes to discourage a man from dating her. And, perhaps, she would have succeeded easily if fate had not brought her together with a guy who has the exact opposite task. He must fall in love with the girl in ten days, who became that very journalist.
So it remains to be wondered who among them will fulfill their task, and is it possible to build a relationship that began in a lie? This comedy has everything, and wonderful actors, led by Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, and wonderful humor, and touching moments. So it is not clear for what reasons this film was coldly received in the West. But in Russia, this tape was to the taste of the viewer. In any case, for those who want to spend a pleasant time, this work is recommended for viewing.
"Alexander" (2004)
One of the most controversial works was the historical drama Alexander. It is still unclear why the viewer abroad appreciated this picture so badly. It seems to be everything in it: entertainment, a good script, an interesting historical personality of the protagonist, a powerful cast. But in the West, the film was rated very badly. At the box office in the United States, the film simply failed miserably, and even received as many as six nominations in the anti-award "Golden Raspberry".
Perhaps this is all due to the dissatisfaction of Greece with the fact that the picture made a great emphasis on the bisexuality of the Macedonian. There is also a version that the director did not cope with the task, since the historical drama is not at all his strong point. But all this did not stop me from getting good marks and reviews in our country.
Removal Rules: The Hitch Method (2005)
The essence of this film is that the main character, played by the dazzling Will Smith, helps men win the hearts of the girls with whom they are in love. He easily managed to connect destinies, until he was found, so to speak, "a difficult case." An insecure accountant, and even overweight, fell in love with a famous diva. On top of that, the task is complicated by one journalist who guessed what the protagonist was doing.
In Russia, the film was appreciated with dignity, but foreign viewers did not share the delight of this tape. It can be assumed that women could be offended by the essence of the film itself, that all girls are alike, and a simple universal approach is enough for them to easily win them over. In Russia, however, this attitude is more relaxed than in the West.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
This film is already the second adaptation of the book of the same name by the Norwegian writer Roald Dahl. By the way, abroad the first version was greeted more enthusiastically than the second. But the Russians liked the second part more. Perhaps this was facilitated by the inimitable Johnny Depp, who is loved in our country.
This work is interesting for both adults and children. The plot is based on the story of how several children end up in the closed and mysterious Willy Wonka factory. This factory makes some of the best chocolate in the world, as well as other sweets. Now, finally, a few lucky ones will be able to open the veil of secrets of the factory and its owner. But only the most worthy will be able to reach the end of the excursion.
High School Musical (2006)
The film tells the story of two students of the school. Gabriella is a calm and correct student, Troy is a handsome man and the captain of the basketball team, they are so different, but they are united by one goal. They decided to secretly audition for the school musical. This act simply turns their dreams, life and even school upside down.
This tape, of course, is more designed for schoolchildren and students. Russian teenagers liked the picture, but in Western countries they were more picky about this work. Although, perhaps, the statistics on IMDb were spoiled by the adult generation. American critics consider this film to be mediocre. They say that the actors play emotionlessly, utter banal lines and sing melodies that are not catchy.
X-Men: The Beginning. Wolverine "(2009)
This film shows the story of Wolverine's past, his difficult relationship with his half-brother and the Weapon X program. In addition, he meets other mutants, as well as meets new X-Men. Usually films based on "Marvel Comics" easily win the hearts of viewers, both in our country and abroad. But, apparently, this time something was missing for the Western audience. But in Russia, the first of the spin-offs to their favorite X-Men films was much better received.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
The life of nineteen-year-old Alice was divided into before and after. It happened during one of the parties held in her honor. There, Hamish, the rich but stupid son of the Lord, proposes to the main character. Afraid to answer, the young lady flees. During her escape, she notices a strange bunny dressed in a suit, constantly looking at his watch. The intrigued girl decided to follow him. This is where her incredible adventures begin.
It is worth noting that, in general, fairy tales and cartoons are valued much better in Russia than abroad. Perhaps because in our country they are loved not only by children, but also by adults. This picture clearly shows the different assessments of our and foreign viewers.
"Pretend to be my wife" (2011)
The main character of the film has his own mascot - an engagement ring that helps him meet women. He tells the girls about a non-existent bad wife in order to impress them, or at least arouse compassion. But one day his method failed, the girl, who really liked him, wanted to meet his wife. And then his assistant came to the rescue of the man, who played his wife in this “play for one spectator”. But the game has gone too far.
In Russia, the picture received a good rating. Yes, it is not surprising when the main roles are played by the cheerful Adam Sandler and the beauty Jennifer Aniston. In this film, in addition to wonderful actors, beautiful landscapes, good jokes, but apparently this was not enough for US viewers to give a higher rating.
