Evgeny Samoilov was born in 1912 into a simple Petersburg family: his father was a gunsmith worker, and his mother was engaged in housekeeping. The father often went with his two sons to the Alexandrinsky Theater, and Eugene became interested in art from childhood. True, he dreamed of becoming not an actor, but an artist. He went to audition for a private art studio of N. Khodotov with a friend and, to his surprise, was enrolled. At the same time, Samoilov began studying in the evenings in the studio at the acting department, and then continued his acting education at the Leningrad Art Polytechnic.

Samoilov did not look like a character in the script, he never rode a horse, but Dovzhenko was not embarrassed. While working on the image, the director taught Samoilov to "go from oneself" in order to better understand his hero, and Colonel Shchors, in his performance, looked on the screens as a noble and intelligent man, with a passionate faith in a wonderful future. For this work, Samoilov received the Stalin Prize. Later, the actor said that the meeting with Dovzhenko determined his acting destiny for decades to come.
