A medieval Italian village that has been submerged under a lake for decades is now rising to the surface again. The earth's crust is in constant motion, undergoing significant changes. Some of them are caused by our mother nature, and some are caused by people. One such change is the construction of dams designed to supply water and electricity. Now this village looks strange and even creepy.
The construction of dams was once a particularly popular solution for those in need of energy and water. Many areas are in need of this. Electricity is needed not only for household needs, but also for the functioning of industry. In the past, people were less aware of the environmental consequences of forced redevelopment of landscapes and waterways. Therefore, the decisions on the construction of dams were made by the governments of all countries more than willingly.
Today we try to interfere less with natural processes. Rivers and lakes are no longer blocked in order to build power plants. Of course, not everywhere.
The peak in the development of the construction of such facilities fell on the period after the end of the Second World War. Back then, energy companies were determined to supply energy to as many regions as possible across Europe and North America. Both continents have experienced a dam-building boom that now seems risky in retrospect, especially in an environmental context.
In 1953, just such a dam was built in Italy. This was done at Lake Wagli. The region then experienced a booming tourism industry. However, after some time, the medieval village of Fabbriche di Careggine was completely covered with water. The main attraction in the area has become inaccessible.
Dams, like any construction site, need proper care and maintenance. For this, the lake must be drained before the beginning of next year. To the delight of Italians who live there and tourists who come from afar, the village began to rise to the surface.
The lake was last drained in 1994. It then attracted nearly a million visitors to see these archaeological ruins. Experts date the age of the village to 12-13 centuries. Historians say the settlement was built as a workers' settlement for iron ore workers in the area. A local resident, the daughter of the former mayor, Lorenz George, posted a message on social media that she has every reason to believe that Lake Wagli will be drained in 2020.
Representatives of Enel Power, which manages the lake operations, say that in fact the discussion on this issue is too early. The process will begin later, and the lake will be completely drained only in 2021. Then only it will be possible to talk about the opening of a historical landmark. While you can explore the ruins by taking a boat trip.
While the village looks pretty creepy - like some kind of mirage. This does not prevent the place from being popular with tourists. However, like the entire province of Lucca in Tuscany. The region is now experiencing economic difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, it is quite understandable that the locals again cannot wait for the flow of tourists to resume. The main attraction for which is this medieval village.
Quarantine is still being enforced somehow, but once the ancient archaeological site under the Italian lake becomes visible, it will be difficult to keep both locals and tourists from visiting this place. After all, this is an amazing unique sight and part of the legendary history of Italy.
