Modern radar systems tirelessly monitor the movement of aircraft in the sky, it seems, leaving them no chance of mysterious disappearance. However, over the past few decades, there have been situations when aircraft disappeared from radars without a trace. The most amazing thing is that sometimes numerous search operations can not find any traces of the aircraft and its passengers.

A British South American Airways aircraft carrying 31 people, including 6 crew members, disappeared in the early morning hours of late January 1948. It happened over the Atlantic Ocean during a flight between Santa Maria in the Azores and Bermuda. Investigation showed that the plane most likely went off course due to strong winds, and the pilot's determination to continue the route led to the crash. The rescue operation yielded no results, and the subsequent searches for the vessel found no sign of Star Tiger.

On October 21, 1978, a Cessna 182L, piloted by 19-year-old 4th class pilot Frederick Valentich, disappeared without a trace while flying over the Bass Strait in Australia. At 18-00 he got into the cockpit and took off, and after a little over an hour, the dispatchers received a very strange message from him: allegedly a large strange plane with landing lights lit above was flying over him. Controllers on their radars did not find any aircraft in that area, except for a Cessna 182L. While the ground services were trying to understand what was happening in the sky, Frederic Valentich began to panic desperately. He spoke with growing concern that an unknown strange plane seemed to be playing with him, having flown over his small aircraft three times in a row.

After that, Frederick arbitrarily changed his route, starting to fly in a circle, ostensibly trying to break away from the pursuit. The whole action lasted six minutes, and then the pilot announced that the strange aircraft hanging over him was not an aircraft at all, a grinding sound was heard in the speakers, after which there was complete silence. The plane was no longer on any radar. The search operation began just half an hour later. No signs of a crash were found. The plane and its 19-year-old pilot disappeared without a trace. For some, such a mysterious disappearance gave reason to believe that the light aircraft, along with the pilot, were abducted by aliens.

This Varig Brazilian Airlines freighter, which departed on January 30, 1979, from Tokyo's Narita International Airport, carried paintings by the Japanese-born Brazilian artist Manubu Mabe. Their cost was 1.24 million US dollars. About half an hour after the departure, the plane, which was at that time over the Pacific Ocean, disappeared from the radar without a trace. The fate of the aircraft itself, six crew members and 153 paintings are still unknown, since no traces of them were found during search operations.

Boeing-727

A Boeing 727 was hijacked from the Cuatro de Fevereiro International Airport in Angola on May 25, 2003. On that day, flight engineer and aircraft mechanic Ben Charles Padilla, who had only a private pilot's license, and his assistant, John Mikel Mutantu, boarded the aircraft to jointly with Angolan mechanics conduct pre-flight training. At the same time, neither Padilla nor Mutantu could control the plane, since the presence of three well-trained pilots is required for the flight. Nevertheless, after the engineer and his assistant were boarded, the plane began to make chaotic movements along the runway, and then took off and disappeared in the sky forever. No one else saw the plane itself or the two people who hijacked it.

This Malaysia Airlines plane, carrying 239 people, including 12 crew members, disappeared from all radars on March 8, 2014, just 40 minutes after taking off from Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia. Planned pre-flight preparation showed the operability of all systems and the absence of malfunctions. Takeoff and flight took place as usual, no reports of emergency situations on board were received by the services. At 01:22 the Boeing 777-200ER, located at an altitude of about 10,500 meters, disappeared from all radars. After the disappearance, according to the investigation, the plane deviated from the route and stayed in the sky for another seven hours, and then disappeared completely. Two large-scale search operations yielded no result, but a year and a half after disappearing 4000 km from the alleged crash site and outside the scope of the official search, several scattered parts of the plane were found, which made it possible to conclude that it had crashed. True, the reasons why the liner was in the sky for several hours after disappearing from the radars, and the circumstances of the death of 239 people, are still unknown.

Air travel is considered one of the safest types of passenger transportation. Every day, more than 80,000 aircraft around the world successfully fly, moving about three million people over great distances. Nevertheless, the history of world aviation has dozens of air accidents. Hundreds of people die in a matter of minutes, and often they have no chance of salvation. Cases when a person survived an airliner crash, are isolated and cause massive resonance.
