Children's dreams must come true, and miracles have no statute of limitations. Confirmation of these simple truths can serve as a story that recently happened to 90-year-old Amsterdam resident Arnold Neuhaus. As a child, he won a competition from the KLM airline, but circumstances turned out to be such that he could not receive the promised prize. After 83 years, the award found a hero.
The competition for the best window dressing in the KLM offices in Ghana and Amsterdam took place back in 1935. The main prize was announced to be a flight on an airplane; one could not even dream of seeing the city from a bird's eye view. A drawing by seven-year-old Arnold was recognized as the best project, and soon a letter was sent to the family's address with an official notification that the boy was given a ticket for an air tour. It would seem that there was little to do: get permission from the parents for this flight. Such an opportunity seemed fantastic, because then planes were a rarity.
Circumstances were, unfortunately, not in favor of Arnold. His sister fell ill with scarlet fever, and the whole family was forbidden from contact with other people. A letter from KLM was gathering dust on the shelf in anticipation of better times. Later, the boy often walked past the company's office and each time remembered with annoyance that he had not used his lucky ticket on time.
Years passed, Arnold grew up, he had a family, later - grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. During family gatherings, he sometimes told this amazing story. And then one day Arnold's great-granddaughter decided to try her luck and turned to KLM with a request. She said that her great-grandfather won this ticket and still leads an active lifestyle, so she can easily go on an air walk.
The company decided that if such a flight is to be arranged, then it should feel grandiose, akin to the feelings that the then seven-year-old Arnold could have experienced. In the digital age, it is difficult to surprise an adult, but KLM employees have succeeded. The plane ticket to Arnold was handed over by his great-great-grandson, who is now just 7 years old, and they were offered to fly together. They were taken to the airport in a vintage 1928 Ford A Tudor. Arnold and his great-great-grandson took to the skies on the Dakota DC-3 "Princess Amalia" aircraft.
On the day that Arnold's dream came true, the weather was great. From the plane one could see the whole panorama of Amsterdam, blooming fields of tulips in the Keukenhof park, numerous windmills. When the plane landed, Arnold was greeted by his entire large and friendly family. It's true that a dream has no statute of limitations, that's why it is a dream!
From time to time, the management of airlines around the world does things that return faith in goodness. A year ago, American airline rescued dozens of stray animals affected by Hurricane Harvey.
