If I had a chance to name the most unusual thing that is currently produced in America, not everyone would have remembered grand pianos from Steinway & Sons. Musical instruments are made by hand and using a unique technology. The music studio is equipped with machines with steam engines and produces about 100 grand pianos a year.
Grand pianos have been created in the city of Astoria for over 160 years, and since then these musical instruments have gained worldwide popularity. The factory is located in the center of Astoria, passing by, one cannot remain indifferent to the music sounding from everywhere. The workshop is more like a carpenter's room: work is in full swing everywhere, sawdust is scattered, and the strong hands of the craftsmen continue to do their work.
To make a grand piano, a team of 6 people is required, they will give the shape of a piano to ordinary sheets of wood. The full production cycle takes about a year. The technology is passed down from generation to generation, the names of the specialists who worked on the creation of the grand piano at each stage are engraved on it. There is even such a case: a grand piano arrived in Astoria for reconstruction, and the master took it apart to see the inscription made by his grandfather decades ago.
The company was founded by Heinrich Steinwag, an orphan from Germany, who was neither smart nor quick-witted. He founded a company that made wardrobes. In 1850, Heinrich emigrated to the United States, where he continued to offer products with the Steinway logo.
In addition to pianos, the founders of the company dreamed of equipping a park, a place where everyone would feel at home. Now the Steinway & Sons company has equipped the Steinway Village, it is convenient for everyone, regardless of the purpose for which you came (to work, soak up the sun or lie on the beach). The town even has its own tram line. This transport began to go long ago, when it was necessary to collect and send workers to factories.
The grand piano today is not only a home instrument, but also an outdoor one. In many cities, it is common practice when bright pianos installed right on the main street. Many strive to take advantage of this situation.
