Video: The Celebrity Phenomenon: Why More People Are "Famous Just Because They Are Famous"
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
The word "celebrity" was invented by the American historian and culturologist Daniel Burstin back in 1961. The term reflected a phenomenon that surprised many: - British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge wrote about this phenomenon a little later. It was with his easy presentation that the sonorous word began to be used in the media, although today it is often used incorrectly.
The first celebrity in history
Cleo de Merode received this "title" for an absolutely incredible fame, which became her happiness and unhappiness at the same time. The illegitimate daughter of an Austrian aristocrat was born in Paris in 1875. In those days, at least some data was required to gain initial popularity, and Cleopatra undoubtedly had them, but not in her chosen area. In history, she remained as a dancer, but she became famous all the same thanks to her amazingly attractive appearance.
Any public craft in the 19th century meant a scandalous reputation for the girl, and Cleo acquired it. However, even in her old age, already in the 1950s, she sued a writer who called her a courtesan. Nevertheless, scandals, even if made up, always contribute to popularity. At the beginning of the 20th century in France, perhaps, there was no woman more popular than this not very talented dancer. She managed to "get promoted" by selling her own photographs. At 23 years old, Cleo de Merode was recognized as the most beautiful woman in France. Such "titles" are always very conditional, although the world's first celebrity looks much nicer than its modern followers.
Family traditions
The American actress Zsa Zsa Gabor is called another famous-for-what-for-what-the-secular lioness. The filmography of this 1950s star is far more scarce than her husband's list. Zsa Zsa was married nine times, and only in one of the marriages was she able to give birth to a child (evil tongues claim that her husband had to resort to violence for this). Gabor's “success story” is very reminiscent of the “career” of modern celebrities: after several appearances in the cinema, she became a regular participant in television programs and entertainment shows, managed to form an opinion about herself as a star of social life. After a while, scandals and sensations became the "mechanism" of her success, and the flywheel started working to its fullest. It is interesting that she lived to be 99 years old and was able to see the rise of the next such "star", to which she had the most direct relation.
The very only man from whom she gave birth to a daughter (already, by the way, after the divorce), was also a remarkable person. Conrad Nicholson Hilton, an American entrepreneur, has gone down in history as the founder of the Hilton hotel chain and a revolutionary in this business. It was he who came up with the idea of connecting ordinary hotels with restaurants and casinos, as well as evaluating their level with stars, like cognac. It is possible that the main connoisseurs of international social life have already guessed that the great-granddaughter of a successful businessman has become the very main “secular lioness of the planet”, about whom no one can really explain, and what she is famous for. According to the official version, Paris Hilton is an American film actress, singer, songwriter, fashion model and designer, but she is also an example of a classic celebrity, because in none of these areas has she left a significant mark comparable to her fame.
Another "family contract" surprised the world by the name Kardashian. This family is already called a "cultural phenomenon", because in addition to the size of some parts of the body, girls can not boast of anything. However, they managed to build a whole business empire, which is based only on their popularity, which feeds itself. It all started with a dirty scandal in a reality show, but then for some reason very quickly turned into a fairy tale: own line of clothing and cosmetics, a mobile application, collaboration with eminent designers, the release of a book with selfies, a line of jewelry, tanning products and hair styling, contracts with modeling agencies … Kim Kardashian and her sisters take royalties for attending parties, because then any mention on their personal pages will actually be an excellent advertisement, 50 million subscribers is not a joke.
Russian stars are no worse
In the issue of reproduction of doing nothing, but terribly popular "stars", we do not lag behind the "developed countries", and maybe even overtake them. The unforgettable Dom-2 has become an invaluable source of real celebrity for Russian show business. Thanks to this program, such names as Ksenia Borodina, Alena Vodonaeva, Victoria Bonya and, of course, Olga Buzova, who collects a lot of negativity on herself, but from that, it seems, only gets prettier, are heard today. Ksenia Sobchak also first appeared on the screens and in people's hearts in this show, but there are several more reasons for her popularity, however, none of them is associated with special creative talents.
Dom-2 was closed, but this reality show became a launching pad for 8 new millionaires.

Since rainbow clouds are quite a rare phenomenon, it is rather difficult to see them with your own eyes. More than two thousand years remained before the appearance of the first high-speed highways with asphalt concrete pavement, and the Romans already knew how to build roads that were in many ways not inferior to modern ones. What is point Nemo, why they could not find it for so long, and when they found it, they were scared
The most surprising fact about this conditional point in the World Ocean is probably the very fact of its existence. It was possible to calculate the ocean pole of this inaccessibility thanks to the calculations of the engineer Hvoja Lukatele from Croatia. According to them, point Nemo is closer to people in orbit than on Earth. It is Lukatele who is considered the discoverer of point Nemo

Every country and even every city has its own laws and prohibitions, sometimes quite strange.
