Golden Gate Bridge can be considered a visiting card not only of San Francisco, but of the whole of America! Until 1964, it remained the world's largest suspension bridge, but to this day it remains the most recognizable! The other day turned 75 years old since its opening, which has become a real event for the Americans.
The grand opening of the bridge took place on May 27, 1937 at 6 o'clock in the morning. During the first 12 hours, it was pedestrianized, and the next day a car connection was launched along it. Celebrations dedicated to the most famous bridge in the United States are traditional for Americans - in 1987, when the Golden Gate turned half a century, it was also blocked, then about 300 thousand people could walk along the suspended giant.
However, the Golden Gate Bridge is famous not only for its beauty and scale. It is also notorious for being one of the most popular suicide destinations in the world. According to unofficial data, more than 1200 people committed suicide by throwing themselves into the water from it. The documentary "The Bridge" was even directed by Eric Steele, which tells the story of several people who decided to take their own lives on this bridge. It is noteworthy that the footage was filmed with hidden video cameras installed at the Golden Gate. Given the massiveness of suicide cases, special telephones are even installed on the railing of the bridge. Potential suicides can contact a crisis counseling center by simply picking up the phone. Nearby are attached signs with the inscription: “There is hope. Make the call ".
