Imagine that you are eight, nine or ten years old. You've been invited to a birthday costume party and asked to dress like your favorite character, real or fictional. Think about who you wanted to become, or who you imitated as a child.
The most recent series of photographs by Australian artist Wee Spears "Birthday Party" is a collection of portraits of children that were taken at the birthday of the photographer's daughter. Noticing that children love to imitate adults by playing their roles, Spears wondered who they would change into and who they would become if this role-play was brought to a higher level.
Some of the innocent images that children have chosen are princesses, dancers, astronauts or angels. Some boys wanted to be real men, disguised as gladiators or soldiers. Other young participants in the celebration fell under the influence of dark forces and came dressed as executioners or black angels. In general, the party has become a place for the manifestation of secret childhood desires and dreams.
Vee Speers was born in Australia and studied fine arts and photography at Queensland College of Art. V has been living in Paris for 12 years now, doing photojournalism and working in the fashion industry. Her work is widely featured in publications such as The Sunday Times, Harpers & Queen, Arena, Esquire. Since 2002, Spears has participated in collective and individual exhibitions in both Europe and the United States.
