San Francisco artist Jay DeFeo (Jay defeo) did not become a world celebrity, but in the 1950s had a reputation as one of the brightest representatives of the "bit generation" painting. Over his main work - a painting "The Rose" (The rose) - she worked for eight years, and the weight of the monumental masterpiece exceeds a ton.
Jay DeFeo drew inspiration from the avant-garde work of the so-called abstract expressionists like Arshile Gorky and Jackson Pollock; however, even this radical form of contemporary art has managed to take it to a new level. It is easier to find analogues of "Rose" and other program works of DeFeo not even in painting, but in literature: postmodern creativity, for example, Thomas Pynchon in its multi-layeredness and "impenetrability" is quite comparable to the monstrous picture The rose.
"Layering" in this case should be understood literally. For eight years, the artist applied more and more layers of oil paint (gray and white) on her "Rose", until it acquired its finished appearance and, as a result, an unbearable mass. According to Jay DeFeo herself, she thus managed to bless "a happy marriage between painting and sculpture."
Despite all her progressive ideas, the artist, who died in 1989 at the age of sixty, did not have time to make sure that the world art community needed them. Interest in the work of DeFeo, and first of all in "Rose", is reviving now. The famous Whitney Museum of American Art in New York recently opened an exhibition called Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective; to retrieve the Rose from the artist's workshop and deliver it to the museum intact and safe, a crane had to be used.
