In 1959, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences held a grand opening ceremony for the Music Awards. Every year, the Grammy is presented to authors and performers for achievements in the world of music, and this award is the most significant and coveted for many musicians around the world. Our today's review contains the most interesting facts from the history of the award.
Original title
Before the official approval of the name of the prestigious music award, something very different was almost approved. The award was meant to be reminiscent of Thomas Edison, who was called the "father of the gramophone" by one of the founders of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. After the name "Eddie" was dropped, and the award received its permanent name "Grammy".
The first song of the year was in Italian
The best song in 1959 was "Volare" (second name "Nel blu dipinto di blu"), composed by Italians Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno. To date, "Volare" remains the only non-English-language song among all the Grammy winners in the "Song of the Year" category.
Record holders in the number of nominations and victories
The record holder for the number of nominations to date is the American composer, producer and musician Quincy Jones. During his career, he was nominated for a Grammy 80 times and 27 of them became the winner. His creative activity has been going on for over 60 years, and over the years he managed to win many different awards, including Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy.
Hungarian and English conductor Georg Solti holds the palm in terms of the number of Grammy awards received. In total, he received 31 statuettes and thanks to this he became the record holder of the Guinness Book of Records.
Among the groups, the leader is the Irish collective "U2", which won the Grammy 22 times. But most of the Grammy gramophones belong to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which was directed by Georg Solti for more than 20 years (from 1969 to 1991).
Jimmy Webb's amazing win
The song "Up, Up and Away", written by Jimmy Webb, became a major hit in 1967. At the tenth annual Grammy Awards, the song won in several nominations at once, and Jimmy Webb himself became the only performer in history to ever receive a Grammy award simultaneously for music, lyrics and orchestration.
Big four
At the 23rd Grammy Awards, American performer Christopher Cross won all four of the most significant awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Best New Artist nominations. And in addition he took the fifth prize "For the best arrangement".
In 2020, Billie Eilish was able to repeat the record of Christopher Cross and won the "Big Four" music awards, becoming the youngest winner of the best album of the year in the history of the Grammy awards.
Conversational genre
The Grammy was originally conceived as a music award, but spoken recordings also receive some awards. For example, Robin Williams is the recipient of the prestigious award for Best Comedy Album. And in 2020, the Grammy for Best Spoken Album went to the wife of former US President Michelle Obama for her audiobook of memoirs "Becoming." In addition, the lists of Grammy winners of different years include US presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
Fluffy laureate
Among the Grammy winners there are also completely exotic characters. The adorable red puppet character Elmo, one of the most popular and beloved heroes of the Muppet Show, has won three times. In 1998, he won the Best Album for Children nomination for the Elmopalooza album.
Nominations without wins
Norwegian sound engineer Morten Lindbergh can be called a negative Grammy record holder. He was nominated 26 times for a prestigious award, but so far he has not been able to win in any category.
Waiver of the award
In 1991, the Irish singer Sinead O'Connor was nominated for four awards. However, the performer categorically refused to receive the award. She stated that the Grammy is a reflection of destructive values and is saturated with insincerity. Even winning her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got in the Best Alternative Music Performance nomination did not make her receive a gold gramophone.
The most touching moment
In 2010, the organizers decided to award the posthumous Grammy Award to Michael Jackson for special achievements and contributions to the development of the recording industry. The children of the King of Pop Prince and Paris received the award. Their speech was so heartfelt that the whole audience could hardly restrain sobs. This moment became the most poignant and touching in the entire history of the presentation of the award.
Eight times became the owner of the Grammy award Tina Turner. For more than 20 years she has lived in her villa in Switzerland, enjoys family happiness and goes on stage only for her own pleasure. But it was not always so - there were times when life seemed to her a nightmare.

Where is the most comfortable prison in the world and other strange facts about correctional colonies from around the world?
Presumably, prisons are built to punish and rehabilitate criminals. It turns out that this is not always the case. In corrupt countries, only poor prisoners are really punished "to the fullest." The wealthier simply live in fully furnished, air-conditioned cells with televisions, cell phones, microwaves, jacuzzis and women of easy virtue. In most cases, these criminals can still run their businesses from prison. And similar prisons
