Cozy patios, or patio, - the highlight of the architectural style of the Spanish city Cordoba. Every year at the beginning of May takes place here floristic festivaland the patios are literally buried in greenery. During the so-called "Battle of the Flowers" amazed tourists enjoy the splendor, and a competent jury determines the most picturesque decor.
The festival takes place over two weeks, during which time patios, usually closed, are available to numerous visitors. Traditionally, the Spaniards decorate their courtyards with wrought iron trellises, fountains, and pots of jasmine, geraniums and carnations are placed on the walls and balconies, which together resemble floral carpets or fancy patterns of Islamic mosaics. It is very prestigious to win the competition, and besides, the best hosts receive a cash prize.
In Cordoba, patios have been around since time immemorial. They were built by the Romans, who thus fought an arid climate. Later, the Arabs began to decorate courtyards with artificial ponds and plants to maintain shade and coolness. The city still has patios built in the 10th century, when Cordoba, with a population of half a million, was the center of Andalusia, the Muslim caliphate in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Christians who conquered Cordoba in the 13th century were also involved in landscaping the patio. In these courtyards, it was customary to meet guests and leave the horses. Through the patio they entered the house, as a rule, they used the first floor in the summer, and the second - in the winter. In the 18-19 centuries, patios began to be decorated with marble, the first fountains and closed galleries appeared.
The patio festival was first held in Cordoba in 1918 under the auspices of the city hall, and from 1921 a competition for the best decoration began. Prizes have been awarded to the winners since 1933, there are many nominations. As a rule, the best modern and historically preserved patios are chosen, taking into account the variety of colors, their variety, composition, aesthetics and saturation of the placement. By the way, decorating with artificial flowers is strictly prohibited.
By the way, on the site Kulturologiya. RF we have repeatedly written about how the "flower parades" are held in different parts of the world.
