The Telli Baba Mausoleum in Istanbul: The Place to Come to Find Personal Happiness

There are many amazing places in this ancient majestic city. He always pleases with an abundance of colors and aromas, every time he looks in a new way and gives faith in a miracle. On the outskirts of the city there is a modest Telli Baba mausoleum, where many people come every day, and wedding corteges gather. Today, it is not reliably known who was (or was) Telli Baba during his lifetime, because three legends are connected with this name at once.

According to one version, the name Telli Baba hides Imam Abdul Efendi, who lived in the 16th century AD. Before becoming an imam, Abdula made his living by ferrying people across the Bosphorus. The beloved girl was from a wealthy family, and therefore her parents did not even want to hear about a simple and poor young man. She agreed to flee with Abdula, but died during the storm. He wandered around the city for a long time in a hat on which he sewed gold and silver threads from the veil of his beloved, and could not come to terms with the idea of continuing life without his bride. Later, the realization of the love of the Almighty came to a simple young man, he went to the army, served as an imam and won honor and respect. After the death of Telli Baba, he began to appear in a dream to the sick girl with an appeal to visit the place of his rest. After visiting the tomb of Telli Baba, the girl was healed and built a tomb in gratitude for the healing.

According to the second legend, the same Abdul Efendi, who ferried people across the Bosphorus, saw a small boat during a storm, desperately trying to get to the coast. He rushed to help, but was able to save only one girl. When she returned some time later to thank her savior, she learned of his death. At his grave, the rescued girl left her veil with threads of gold and silver.

The third legend says that a girl who drowned with a boat is buried in the grave. Local residents found her body on the shore, buried her, and put silver threads on her grave as a sign that an unmarried girl was buried here. Many years later, the deceased girl appeared in a dream as another, dying of tuberculosis, and asked to put her grave in order. In return for the removed last refuge of the drowned, the sick girl received healing.

Fulfillment of desires

Outwardly, the Telli Baba mausoleum looks very modest, but there are always a lot of people here. Young people come here with a request to help them find a soul mate, newlyweds come to thank for their family and ask for the welfare and the birth of children. Many people just want some very important wish to come true. Telli Baba invariably helps the lonely to start a family, hears the prayers of the childless, gives those who ask for a home a roof over their heads, and gives healing to the sick.

To make your dream come true, you need to take a silver thread from the coffin of Telli Baba. If you want the fastest fulfillment of a wish, the thread should be short, a long silver thread increases the period of fulfillment of the wish. When leaving, you can leave a small tribute to the caretakers of the mausoleum.

After the desire has been fulfilled, the gimp must be returned to its place. Instead, you can immediately take another thread, making a new wish. The threads on the tomb never end, as there is an endless stream of those whose desires have been fulfilled. Brides often leave threads from their wedding dress here.

The stories of dreams come true are passed from mouth to mouth and are confirmed by people of different faiths who arrived at the mausoleum with threads in their hands. The whole grave of Telli Baba is strewn with these threads, similar to New Year's rain.

How to get there

The Telli Baba Mausoleum in Sariyer is open every day, the entrance is open from 9 to 18 hours. You can get from the final metro station Khadzhiosman by bus 25a. From the stop "Telli Baba" you just need to go down the road towards the sea, only about 300 meters.

It is worth remembering that the Telli Baba mausoleum is a holy place and the rules of conduct in it are the same as when visiting a mosque. You cannot walk in shoes and women with bare heads are not encouraged. In the first room of the mausoleum, you can buy a handkerchief and threads as a souvenir or a gift for Telli Baba. Only the threads from the tomb guarantee the fulfillment of desires.
