Cyprus has many attractions associated with the name of Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of beauty. The power of this goddess, according to legend, obeyed not only people, but also the gods themselves. And today the places where, according to the legends, the goddess used to be, remain attractive to travelers. Many tourists sincerely believe that a visit to the Baths of Aphrodite on the Akamas Peninsula will bring good luck in romantic relationships, return youth and beauty.
Romantic legend
Ancient myths say: in this place, surrounded by rocks and hidden by shady trees, the goddess of love and beauty loved to take baths. Here no one interfered with her solitude, and Aphrodite enjoyed peace and tranquility, splashing in crystal water, bestowing eternal youth and beauty.
And only once did a young hunter, exhausted by thirst, come out to the reservoir. Adonis bent down to drink water and saw a naked Aphrodite. The young man was struck by the beauty and grace of the goddess. However, Aphrodite herself did not remain indifferent to the beautiful young man. A secluded grotto has become a meeting place for lovers.
However, it was inappropriate for a goddess to love a mere mortal. Artemis sent a bloodthirsty boar to kill Adonis and cut off the vicious connection. Drops of Adonis' blood turned into scarlet roses, and Aphrodite's tears for her beloved blossomed into tender anemones. The young man died of his wounds. Aphrodite was so inconsolable in her grief that the formidable Zeus took pity on her and ordered Hades to keep the young man in the kingdom of the dead for only four months a year. The rest of the time, Adonis could be in the company of his beloved.
Bath magic
Locals sincerely believe that the water in the bath keeps the memory of the love of a goddess and a mere mortal. There is a sign according to which lovers who have been in the bath will be able to keep their feelings until the end of their days.
True, plunge into the waters of the bath itself will not work. This place is protected by law and bathing in a stone bath is prohibited. But can such a prohibition stop lovers who believe in the miraculous power of the magic bath? Tourists, determined to preserve their feelings, agree with the guide to take a bath in the bath of Aphrodite.
A small spring located nearby does not satisfy the needs of loving visitors. After all, these waters promise only the return of youth and beauty, as well as help in conceiving a child.
Some sources say that you need to give water to a lover who does not reciprocate with the water collected in the bath. As once Adonis, who drank water, fell in love with Aphrodite, so a modern man will inflame with a passion for a woman who gave him magic water.
Enchanting beauty
The bath is located in a very picturesque place. An old fig tree hangs over the most natural bathroom, keeping shade and coolness. There are two paths leading to the grotto, named after the lovers. It is believed that it was along these paths that Adonis and Aphrodite came to the meeting place.
Everything around breathes with pristine beauty and romance. Not far from the bathing house there is a specially equipped place with benches where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views.
Nearby there is a beautiful pebble beach where you can swim in clear water and sunbathe. And along the path from the bath itself you can go to the Fountain of Love, located 8 kilometers from the bath of Aphrodite.
You can get to the bathing place by taxi from Paphos or Polis. From Polis itself, you can get to the Baths of Aphrodite by regular bus 622, the interval of which is only an hour.
One and a half kilometers from the bathhouse there is a small village of Latchi, where you can taste the best local cuisine in a tavern.
Even those who do not really believe in the magic of this place should visit here at least to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of natural beauty and romance.
Baths of Aphrodite is located just 50 kilometers from where you can see stunning antique mosaics and other attractions.
