James Cameron's films, regardless of their genre, have always enjoyed immense popularity, both with viewers and film critics. And it is not surprising that he is one of the most successful and popular directors of all time, whose work is beyond praise and awards. But nevertheless, even the great creator can find pictures that not only critics, but also the audience smashed to smithereens. Therefore, today we will talk not only about his best works, but also about those that cause bewilderment.

1. Avatar (7.8)

Avatar by James Cameron can rightfully be considered one of the best and most popular films in the history of cinema. Despite being overvalued and criticized, this picture continues to enjoy immense popularity even to this day. Many people still discuss the fictional world and race with their own specific language, as well as stunning three-dimensional graphics and special effects, which, alas, only a few can boast of. However, soon (and in 2022) the premiere of the second part of this film will take place. Avatar 2 tells about the lives of Neytiri and Jake on the planet Pandora, as well as their children and a couple of resurrected characters who died in the first part.

2. Abyss (7.6)

The crew of an experimental, high-tech submarine is called to action to investigate the mysterious accident of a nuclear submarine. A series of strange encounters leads the crew to suspect that the accident was caused by an extraterrestrial ship, and that they will soon encounter alien beings.

However, in order to establish contact, they have to plunge into the very "heart" of the abyss, an extremely deep underwater canyon.

Despite the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, The Abyss received a very low rating and is considered far from being the most successful work of a talented director.

3. Titanic (7.8)

You can talk about the film "Titanic" indefinitely, discussing the pros and cons of this picture. Nevertheless, it was thanks to James Cameron that the world saw on the big screen one of the most dramatic stories based on real events about life, love and imminent death …

Three hours and thirty minutes fly by unnoticed and during this time the viewer manages to live every moment together with the main characters on board the legendary liner. Perhaps this is one of the few films that touches to the depths of the soul from the first minute, leaving few people indifferent until the very end.

Joy, sadness and tears - this is exactly what can be said about Cameron's "Titanic", which, when released, immediately became a hit of all time, firmly seated in the hearts of many viewers.

4. True Lies (7.2)

But the film "True Lies", despite its non-trivial plot at that time and an excellent cast (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis), alas, has a rather low IMDb rating and is considered another failed film in the director's list.

Although many fans of this film do not quite understand such an assessment and are sincerely surprised at why a breathtaking action movie with notes of irony and sarcasm is included in Cameron's list of unsuccessful and disastrous films.

5. Terminator (8.0)

The Terminator movie is set in part in the distant future (albeit not so distant), in which Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the role of a cyborg sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor. Everyone probably remembers the fantastic game of the main characters, causing goosebumps from every action. Someone empathized with Kyle Reese, who tried to save his beloved and prevent the terminator from doing what he had planned, and someone sat in suspense to the end, worried about the cyborg who came to Sarah's soul.

As a result, this film became so iconic that it literally "blew up" the cinema with its box office. It is not surprising that over time, this picture has a number of sequels and spin-offs, each of which, in one way or another, differed in its popularity.

6. Ghosts of the Abyss (6.8)

Moving away from fictional feature films for a moment, the Ghosts of the Abyss documentary brings together two of James Cameron's previous films, Titanic (the documentary is an exploration of the wreck of a famous ship) and The Abyss (the documentary shares the same title with his science fiction film 1989 and also focuses on sunken ships).

It is a visual masterpiece that has achieved the most detailed views of the ship ever captured on camera and combined them with impressive CGI recreations of what it would look like. Despite the impressive directorial work and a very exciting plot, "Ghosts of the Abyss", unfortunately, remained beyond the limits of success assigned to it. The film received such a low rating that it received a 6.8 rating on the IMDb version.

7. Aliens (8.3)

The film "Alien" needs no introduction. Ridley Scott's masterpiece of horror in the truest sense of the word - excited the whole world, forcing humanity to look around, flinching at every rustle behind.

However, "Aliens" by James Cameron is in no way inferior to the first film. He took this picture to a new level, and Sigourney Weaver's impeccable performance only added adrenaline to what was happening on the screen.

8. Aliens from the Abyss (6.4)

"Aliens from the Abyss" is another Cameron's film, which, despite its quite interesting plot, beauty of the picture and various kinds of special effects, is a failure among the rest of his works.

9. Terminator: Doomsday (8.5)

Needless to say, Terminator: Doomsday is at the top of James Cameron's list of the best films? This picture does not need a special introduction, because almost everyone has heard about it at least once in his life, not to mention that he has seen it.

And if in the first film the terminator came to get rid of Sarah Connor, then here on the contrary - he is practically at the cost of his own life ready to protect her from the T-1000, a robot of a new generation, which tirelessly follows in the footsteps of the main characters throughout the film.

10. Piranhas II: Spawning (3.7)

What can we say, and "Piranha 2: Spawning" - takes first place in the list of Cameron's most disastrous works. A weak plot with a pretense of horror is sheer absurdity, causing bewilderment and stupor. And no matter how the viewer tries to understand and justify what is happening on the screen, the critics instantly smashed this "masterpiece" to smithereens, giving the film the lowest rating. However, IMDb rated this picture at 3.7.

Continuing the topic of films - 7 melodramas that can melt even the stony heart.
