By the 1930s, burlesque, a form of entertainment theater show, was gaining popularity in America. She combined conversational numbers with performances by dancers. Gradually, the dances became more frank, and jokes and laughter faded into the background. One of the famous artists of that time was Zorita. She surprised the audience with her dance, in which she performed two parts at once, but the burlesque diva made a real splash with performances with snakes almost naked.
The dancer's real name is Katherine Boyd. At the age of eighteen, she won a beauty contest, and at twenty, she plunged headlong into the world of burlesque, taking the pseudonym Zorita for herself. The dancer tried to make each performance memorable. Either she was a victim of a spider, which, with his "paws", took off the elements of her clothing, then she performed two parts at once.
Many people remember her dance "Half and Half". One part of the artist's costume was made in the form of a tuxedo, and the other - a dress. Zorita danced in front of the audience only in profile, appearing now in the role of a woman, then a man. It was so skillfully done that it seemed as if there were really two people on the stage.
Zorita understood that for real popularity it is not enough just to dance beautifully, you need to make it so that everyone will be remembered. The girl decided to shock the audience with performances with snakes. She went on stage almost naked, holding a python on her shoulders. For the late 1930s and early 1940s, nude dances were, to put it mildly, a surprise. The audience condemned Zorita for her frank performances, but still went to watch the seductive beauty smoothly move to exotic music.
The snakes not only glorified Zorita, but also led her to the end of her career. In 1942, the dancer was arrested for cruelty to her pets. The burlesque diva was accused of gagging her snakes before each performance. In the end, Zorita was released on bail of $ 1,500, but the snakes were confiscated.
Having done away with burlesque, Zorita opened several strip clubs in 1954. She taught dancers the intricacies of her craft, but she never revealed the main secret of how to dance with snakes.
Today Dita von Teese is called the queen of burlesque. This seductive beauty has gone from an ugly duckling to one of the most seductive women on the planet.
