Perhaps the American rock fans know the name of David Byrne, who was once one of the members of the Talking Heads. The group broke up a long time ago, but David did not leave musical experiments. The result of his activity was an installation that turned an ordinary house into a huge musical instrument.
Playing the Building is an interactive art installation created by David Byrne in collaboration with Creative Time. Through the efforts of the authors, the interior of the room is transformed into a massive sound sculpture, which anyone can “play” on. To implement this idea, a modified old organ was required, placed in the middle of an empty room, and a series of devices connected to it, placed on the structural elements of the building: metal beams, poles, plumb lines, pipelines … Pressing the keys of the organ activates these devices: they do not emit sounds by themselves, but they make the elements of the building vibrate, resonate and vibrate, as a result of which the whole house becomes a kind of musical instrument.
David Byrne says that he was inspired to create such an installation by visiting an old factory in Sweden. “Everyone knows that if we knock, for example, on a metal pole, we will hear a characteristic ringing or clang. But I wondered if pipes could be turned into huge flutes.” It turned out - you can.
To date, the installation can be seen in three cities: London, New York and Stockholm. The first time the installation took place in Sweden and, according to David Byrne, was very successful. People approached the instrument and tried to “play” it with pleasure. The audience greeted short compositions of some amateurs with thunderous applause - the author claims that it was very touching to watch this.
