Cross-stitch is what grandmothers usually do in front of the TV, girls in home economics lessons, women who need something to occupy their hands and calm their nerves, and an artist Alicia Ross from Ohio. However, instead of towels and shirts, pillow covers and napkins with flowers, she embroiders portraits, feelings and emotions. And her embroidered paintings do not hang in the office of labor or above the portraits of Ukrainian classics, but in private collections of eminent people not only in the United States, but also in other countries on both sides of the ocean. Of course, it all started with napkins and small pictures, but then grew into something more than just entertainment, a hobby. As a photographer, Alicia conceived the idea of "photographing" people not only with a camera, but also with spools of thread, hoops and cotton fabric.
Faces that Alicia photographs with threads on cotton, she takes now "on TV", then from the pages of magazines, then on the street or on the Internet. It is important that all these are living people with their own inner world, emotions and feelings, which the embroidery photographer tries to convey in her works. Sometimes she does it right away, and then the picture is born in a matter of hours. And sometimes you have to sit for a long time on one image, now starting, then loosening the embroidery. Art requires sacrifice, the author of the embroidered paintings laughs, and in her case the sacrifice is wasted time, broken threads and punctured fingers.
These and other works by Alicia Ross can be seen on her website.
