The Friedensreich Hundertwasser houses are a real visiting card of Austria. This talented master was engaged in sculpture and painting, but gained worldwide fame thanks to his architectural masterpieces. His invention is the Ideal Home, a building that "lives" in harmony with nature.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (real name Friedrich Stowasser) drew inspiration from the work of Austrian artists such as Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. He painted whimsical pictures, decorated postage stamps and even worked on the creation of state flags. Under the influence of surrealism, Hundertwasser developed his own theory of "transautomatism", the artist sought to weaken the rigid rules that reigned in painting, to create images intuitively. Hundertwasser's architectural style is often compared to that of Antoni Gaudí.
From the 1950s, Hundertwasser took up architecture seriously. The Hundertwasser House in Vienna has long gained worldwide fame. Wave-like lines of colorful floors, a roof on which grass and small shrubs grow, fancy sculpting on the walls … In this building, the architect embodied his ideas about the ideal human habitation. It is noteworthy that he refused the fee for the work, arguing that he only prevented the appearance of an ugly building on the site of the House.
Hundertwasser became a real revolutionary in the world of architecture. He zealously declared battle to precise lines and correct geometric proportions. In numerous manifestos and essays, he defended the right of every individual to self-expression, arguing that people are not obliged to live in the same concrete "boxes", but have the right to independently choose how their house will look like. While "greening" their houses, Hundertwasser explained that somehow he was trying to return to nature the territory that people had taken from her.
The ingenious Austrian architect has completed many projects. Among them are the Austrian Church of St. Barbara, the railway station in Uelzen (Germany), a public toilet in Kawakawa (New Zealand) and many others. By the way, Hundertwasser was also famous for his extraordinary antics: he preferred to wear different socks, and among the animal world he most of all loved a snail with a house on its back. Truly - a genius who managed to decorate the world!
