In May 2008, on the eve of the Beijing Olympics, China was hit by a powerful earthquake that killed 70,000 people. China is still struggling to recover from the shock. The country is creating funds for the memory of earthquake victims, many social projects, one of which is led by conceptual artist Zhang Huan. He recently presented his new work, the installation Hope Tunnel, dedicated to the events of 2008.
This installation represents a real train damaged during the 2008 earthquake. Then he derailed and rolled over, taking the lives of several people. Now Zhang Huan has put its remains on display at the Beijing UCCA Center for Contemporary Art.
With the installation Hope Tunnel, Zhang Huan tries to explore the causes that led to such a huge number of human victims within the framework of artistic methods, and also tries to find ways to avoid them later.
The artist calls for finding ways to live in harmony with nature, and not try to conquer it. Indeed, in the future, this could lead to a much greater disaster with a much higher number of victims than in China in 2008.
