What is one person capable of, if he is ready to devote his whole life to his work? A simple Indian peasant showed that there are no limits to human strength and patience. He single-handedly managed to do a job that could only be done by a team of experienced workers and specialists, provided with modern technology. During his lifetime, the Indian authorities thanked him only by paying for the funeral, but recently Manjhi Dashrath became the hero of the film and now, probably, every Indian knows his name.
The village of Hehlor, located in the Indian outback in the state of Bihar, in the middle of the 20th century could not boast of having the benefits of civilization - there was not even a hospital there. Ironically, in fact, the nearest medical facility was located, in principle, not far, but between it and the village was the Hekhlor Ganzh mountain range. The detour road to the city of Gaya took too much time for residents - they had to drive (or go) as much as 70 kilometers. Of course, people pestered the state administration with requests to pave a direct path to the hospital, but, as often happens, the officials were dragging their feet or responding that the state budget could not afford such work.
Dashrath Manjhi was born in this village in 1934. The life of a young man was very usual - he, like most of the inhabitants, could not get an education and became a peasant. His family belonged to one of the lower Musahar castes, so from childhood the young man was accustomed to working in the field and cultivating stony soil. At the right time, he found his love. A girl named Falguni Devi became his wife, and the young family began to live in their native village and run their own household.
However, the happiness of the young people did not last long. Falguni fell seriously ill and needed the help of qualified doctors. Dashrath called an ambulance, but while the car was driving to a remote village, the girl died. The young man in love could not find a place for himself from grief. At that moment, he vowed that no one else in his village would die because of the unfortunate mountain. Gathering simple tools, he single-handedly went to do what the local authorities could not - Dashrath decided to build a direct road over the mountain himself.
For 22 years he went every day to the place of his new job and slowly cut a road in the rocks. Whether the locals helped him is not known for sure, at the beginning of this story, of course, he was considered just a madman, possessed by his grief, because there had never been such a case that a person alone could conquer the mountain. However, human patience and strength are truly limitless.
After two decades of hard work, the already elderly Dashrath completed this gigantic work. He worked from 1960 to 1982, and as a result, he carved a passage in the rock 110 meters long and about 9 meters wide. In some places, he had to cut through the rock to a depth of about seven meters. As a result, it turned out that the direct path to civilization was only one kilometer instead of seventy! Hundreds of people came to the opening of the new road, since now not only the village of Hekhlor, but also several neighboring villages have gained access to the nearest city.
Of course, Dashrath Manjhi became first a local celebrity and then a hero known throughout India. Several books have been written about him and in 2015 the film "Manjhi - Man of the Mountain" was created. True, the hero himself did not live to see the premiere. Dashrath died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 73. In recognition of the man's merits, the government of Bihar organized and paid for his funeral. And a few years later, the road that he built was landscaped and even put asphalt on it. The locals call it "Dashratha Road".
Many people, constantly using this path, daily thank the person who alone was able to conquer the mountain. This is how a simple Indian proved that the role of a small person in history can be very significant, even if it is the history of just one village.
In order to win the attention of their beloved, men at all times are ready to go on deeds and commit real madness. A bouquet in blood, a hundred nights at the doorstep, a moat with lions: What went for the love of a man.
